1. Offer value first for at least six months before asking for anything in return.

It shows that you’re a giver, respect boundaries and protocols, differentiates you from many who are takers and playing the short game. You are in it for the long game and see value in investing your time, energy and growing skill set to add value to others.

2. Follow up with someone you’ve met at a networking event or online or through a friend and show them that you’ve acted on something they recommended, whether it’s reading their book (and reviewing it on Amazon or a video review).

It demonstrates that their advice means something to you and you acted upon it.

Again, this is a significant differentiator. Most people don’t follow through when given advice, sit down for an hour and read a book that was recommended by someone.

Follow up to tell the person that you did something useful with it. This is one of the best compliments you can pay someone — to ask for advice, listen carefully without interrupting, thank them for it, act on it and then follow up to tell them how you grew as a result.

3. Thank someone via e-mail or even better (by handwritten letter) afterwards.
