How do we let people know what we do as speakers, consultants + coaches, without the humble-brag?
I’ve been guilty of posting photos of me in front of a helicopter (see here) after a talk, showing “action” photos of me pointing to open space giving a keynote.
A friend of mine, Mitch Joel, recently posted: “Quit trying to put your face on the cover of a magazine, and start creating content worthy of being featured IN the magazine.”
Here are things I see in others’ posts of what I plan to do (and not do) in 2020 by letting people know that I’m a speaker with the intention of integrating actual value.
1. Watch Gair Maxwell’s speaker’s reel produced by Josh Parlee that puts the message before the personality and accolades of the speaker.
2. Make vulnerability the star, not the photoshopped outcome.
3. Check out Ian Altman, B2B Growth Expert videos where’s he’s the messenger of adding 100% real-world value.
3. Instead of listing all that you accomplished this year; write about the temporary setbacks you overcame to get there.
4. Don’t put out your version of a 90’s “I’m on a Yacht” rap video disguised as inspiration so that if you can do it, I can do it, too.
5. Don’t tell me about the ‘value’ and ‘service’ you offer, show me.
