What I’ve learned is that in every room at least 50% of the participants might not be comfortable sharing in front of others.

So, how do you create a working and learning space that’s collaborative yet safe for all people to be comfortable?

They might cringe inwardly when you ask them to go ahead and introduce themselves publicly in front of others. Their eyes could glaze over when you ask them to share something vulnerable with a stranger or even worse, their boss.

I’ve found through giving 45 leadership, emotional intelligence and story-telling keynotes a year plus 10+ years of teaching that tapping into these 3 areas builds high engagement:
1) Self-Reflective – Let your people learn individually first so that the most inward-looking team members feel comfortable in reflecting in their own space.
2) Safe-Social – Gradually incorporate groups of 2 on topics that don’t require too much trust or vulnerability at this point.
3) Community Learning – You might then bring them all together in a new physical space. The reason? By shifting from the individual to the collective, each of us is part of a greater whole and purpose beyond ourselves.

Here’s the Community Component of my recent #Revera keynote for 220 Executive Directors.
