There is nothing like a virtual funeral to reinforce what it means to live a good life in times of crisis, in times of covid. I sat in a virtual service for Sam, a good friend of my parents. An extraordinary man. Here are a few lessons and reminders from his family who spoke about him:

Sam touched a lot of lives. Even though he was very successful as a residential builder (he built one of my family homes) and businessman in three countries, about 90% of what his family beautifully said had nothing to do with his professional accomplishments.

They spoke about his daily check-in phone calls, doing anything to help them out of love, the life lessons he taught them like choosing your battles, knowing where you spend your money and finding meaning in suffering.

It was about his positive attitude, turning his cancer diagnosis 14 years ago into a reason to live each day like it was his last.

It’s about constantly re-inventing yourself and paying no attention to what others might think.

It’s about bringing joy and empathy into your family and friends’ lives + encouraging their dreams.

It’s about being present for the ones you love and helping them in any way you can.

It’s ultimately about personal evolution, love and relationships.
