It’s more effective to take notes on your phone or laptop than by hand.
FALSE: You are at least 20% more effective at learning something conceptually, absorbing the material and increasing your memory recall when you write.
Mueller, Researcher at Princeton University and Oppenheimer, University of California had half a university class take notes by hand watching a video lecture and half the class take notes on laptops.
When it came to basic data and facts, there was no difference. The students scored the same but when it came to conceptual application in which they had to do mental prioritization and different levels of processing, the quality of the handwritten notes far exceeded the ones typed. The researchers found, that when you take notes by hand you have to mentally prioritize and do another layer of processing in accessing critical thinking.
You are using your brain to dive into deeper levels of understanding the content and the context, where the laptop or phone note-takers were passive and distracted.
